ADVANCED PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE IN CIDER
+ APPLICATION
CERTIFICATE IN CIDER
professional credential
The Advanced Professional Certificate in Cider recognizes cidermakers who have progressed beyond foundational knowledge to demonstrate advanced technical understanding, applied decision-making, and professional practice across multiple areas of cider production.
Unlike the Certified Cidermaker qualification, which establishes a foundation of core production knowledge, the Advanced Certificate combines advanced education with demonstrated professional application.
Candidates are evaluated not on a prescribed way of making cider, but on their ability to make informed decisions, explain their reasoning, assess outcomes, solve problems, and manage production intentionally.
Designed as the first advanced professional certification focused specifically on cider production, the certificate establishes a new level of recognition for professional cidermakers.
The standard is scale-neutral and applicable across production methods, cider styles, regions, and professional contexts, recognizing that advanced professional practice can take many forms.
ADVANCED EDUCATION
Candidates develop advanced technical and applied knowledge across the Cider Institute's core curriculum:
Additional specialized learning in areas such as orcharding, business, research, and other relevant fields may complement the core curriculum.
PROFESSIONAL PORTFOLIO
PRODUCTION & DECISION-MAKING
Document a production case study demonstrating goals, strategy, use of analytical and sensory information, decision-making, and evaluation of outcomes.
SENSORY ANALYSIS
Demonstrate how sensory evaluation informs professional practice through tasting, comparative analysis, blending, or production decisions.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Analyze a production challenge, including diagnosis, possible responses, reasoning, action, and outcome.
SYSTEMS & PROCESS CONTROL
Demonstrate intentional management of production through systems such as sanitation, packaging, sensory evaluation, quality control, or SOPs.
CIDERMAKING PHILOSOPHY & INTENT
Articulate your professional perspective on the less prescriptive dimensions of cidermaking, including tradition, innovation, identity, style, or market expectations.
CONTRIBUTION TO THE CIDER COMMUNITY
Demonstrate contribution beyond your own production through research, education, mentorship, presentations, writing, professional gatherings, or other forms of knowledge-sharing and leadership.
FINAL ASSESSMENT
Candidates conclude the process through a scenario-based capstone assessment and oral defense, demonstrating their ability to reason through complex production questions, explain their decisions, and discuss their submitted work.
The central question is not simply, âWhat courses have you taken?â but âHow do you think, make decisions, solve problems, and apply what you know as a cider professional?â
WHAT THE CERTIFICATE REPRESENTS
The Advanced Professional Certificate recognizes cidermakers who can integrate technical expertise, practical experience, and professional judgment to make informed decisions across cider production.
It represents more than advanced coursework. It demonstrates the ability to apply knowledge, evaluate outcomes, solve problems, manage production intentionally, and contribute to the broader cider community.
